Stroud's valleys are wooded. The steep sides of the Slad, Painswick, Frome and Nailsworth valleys carry a lot of broadleaf woodland, much of it beech, and the town's own green spaces, Stratford Park in particular, are full of mature trees. Beech leaves are tough and slow to break down, so instead of rotting away in a gutter they pile up and mat together into a layer that holds water like a sponge. A house on the valley side with woodland above it can fill its gutters in a single autumn.
Then there's the damp. Mist sits in the valley bottoms through autumn and winter, roofs stay wet for days at a time, and moss grows well on both the stone-tiled and the concrete-tiled roofs. Every heavy shower washes some of it into the gutters. Leaves, moss and grit together make the dense, heavy blockages that a vac alone won't shift, which is why we hand-clear after the vac on every job.
And the houses are built into hills. A cottage that's two storeys at the front door can be three at the back, with the downhill gutter well out of reach from a garden that drops away steeply. That changes how we get up there.

Rodborough, Uplands, Chalford, Thrupp and the older streets above the town centre. Many stone houses kept their cast-iron half-round or ogee gutters, and plenty have a mix: original iron on the main house, PVC on later extensions. Cast iron left full of wet leaves rusts at the joints, so a yearly clear matters more on iron than on plastic.
On many older stone houses there's no timber fascia: the gutter sits on brackets driven into the wall. Those brackets loosen over the years, and a gutter full of wet leaves is heavy enough to pull a run out of level so it stops draining towards the outlet. We clear these by hand without levering on the brackets, and flag any that have worked loose.
Cainscross, Cashes Green, Paganhill and much of Stonehouse. Standard PVC on concrete-tile roofs, mostly two storeys on flatter ground, cleared from the ground with long-reach poles. Here the main cause of blockages is moss washed off the roof rather than leaves.
The valley bottoms hold former mills now used as flats and offices, some too tall for poles or ladders. Those go on scaffold or a MEWP, priced separately on the quote, with before-and-after camera footage available on request for the managing agent.
In Stroud, access decides the method more than anywhere else we work. Around Chalford, Rodborough and up the Slad valley, some cottages are reached on foot down steps or a path, lanes are single-track, and there may be nowhere to stop a van outside. Our vac, poles and roof ladder can all be carried in, but it helps to know in advance.
Height on the downhill side is the other factor. Up to three storeys we work with long-reach poles or a roof ladder. Where a house on a slope is taller than that at the back, or the ground below is too steep to work from safely, we'll quote for scaffold or a MEWP and show that cost separately.
Parts of Stroud and the valleys are conservation areas, and there are a lot of listed stone houses. Clearing gutters doesn't need consent. If a listed house needs sections of cast iron replaced, that should be done like for like, and we'll say so on the quote.
Whether it's cast iron on a Rodborough weaver's cottage or PVC on a Cainscross semi, the job is the same: we don't finish until water runs freely from the gutter down to the drain.

Yes. We clear them by hand without levering on the brackets, which on stone houses are often driven straight into the wall and can work loose. Loose brackets, cracked sections and leaking joints are flagged on the quote. Simple joint sealing and realignment we can do; replacing cast iron, particularly on a listed house, we refer to a specialist.
